Autodesk is making a strong move into the regional and local planning market with a new, specialized tool designed to empower planning professionals. At the American Planning Association’s 2015 National Conference in Seattle, Autodesk showcased its latest innovation—Autodesk Urban Canvas—in a collaborative "Tech Zone" alongside Parsons Brinckerhoff. The event, a major gathering for urban planners across the U.S., provided the perfect platform for Autodesk to introduce this groundbreaking software.
Today, Autodesk announced the release of Urban Canvas, a powerful solution that helps planners design, analyze, and collaborate more effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Built on the acquired Synthicity technology, the platform offers a unified environment for urban planning workflows that were previously unavailable on the market. From editing and sharing data on parcels, buildings, and zoning to quickly visualizing and communicating different development scenarios, Urban Canvas streamlines the entire planning process within a dynamic, graphical interface.
This launch follows Autodesk’s recent acquisition of Synthicity, a San Francisco-based company known for its advanced urban simulation tools. Although the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, the integration of Synthicity’s technology into Urban Canvas marks a significant step forward in urban planning software.
Urban planners today often rely on multiple tools such as GIS systems, databases, spreadsheets, and design software to gather and analyze data. With Urban Canvas, these tasks are consolidated into a single, intuitive platform tailored specifically for planners, making it easier to integrate and manage complex planning processes.
The software enables users to:

- Develop and evaluate alternative scenarios and project phasing

Paul Waddell, Professor and Chair of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley and an Autodesk consultant, emphasized the importance of the planning profession in shaping more livable, inclusive, and sustainable cities. He praised the release of Urban Canvas as a key step in enabling sustainable design through technology.
Scott Noble, Industry Strategy Manager at Autodesk, added that the launch of Urban Canvas, combined with enhancements in Autodesk InfraWorks 360 and collaboration with Impact Infrastructure, reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability in urban development.
At the conference, Autodesk and Parsons Brinckerhoff created an immersive “Tech Zone†featuring interactive demonstrations of Urban Canvas and other cutting-edge technologies. Attendees explored digital city models, augmented and virtual reality, BIM and geospatial planning, mobile applications, and forecasting tools—all aimed at transforming the planning process.
