Local news outlet The Chicago Tribune recently covered the latest developments regarding the new Glenview Fire Department headquarters currently under construction. The project is set to be located near the village hall campus, and final designs are now in progress. The Glenview trustees recently reviewed the plans for the new fire station at the former police station site on 1215 Waukegan Road. This location was chosen after the original fire station at 1815 Glenview Road had to relocate due to a planned four-story development between Pine and Church streets. The old police building, which had been vacant for several years, was initially considered for renovation. However, after a detailed cost analysis, the village decided it would be more efficient to demolish the structure and build from scratch, according to Village Manager Todd Hileman. "There wasn't much of a financial difference between rehabbing the building or tearing it down and starting over," Hileman explained. The project is estimated to cost around $5.5 million and is expected to be approved by the village trustees in August. Demolition of the old police station is scheduled for September, with construction to follow shortly after. During a July 16 meeting, trustees asked architects to consider expanding the station to accommodate three fire trucks. They also explored different roof options that could impact the overall cost. Trustee Michael Jenny supported the expansion, suggesting an increase in bunk beds from six to nine, and others agreed. "I'd rather spend on flexibility than on aesthetics," Jenny said, adding that he preferred the more affordable shingled roof over a pricier metal one. Most trustees also leaned toward the shingled roof, despite its shorter lifespan compared to metal. Fire Chief Wayne Globerger, however, suggested adding an extra bay for the battalion chief’s vehicle to make it easier to access during winter months. But he noted the department can adapt if needed. "We’ll make it work with whatever we get," Globerger said. Earlier reports covered the relocation and temporary housing arrangements for the fire department.
