Bill Friedrich found the following information at newslocker.com Good things just keep happening at Portage la Prairie Emergency Services. After receiving $1 million to build an addition, selling an old fire truck for a good cause, and after more than a year of searching, the fire department has finally closed a deal on a new aerial ladder. This is a major milestone for the team, as they've been without one for over 18 months. "I think it's really exciting. It's been a long time coming," said Fire Chief Phil Carpenter. "There have been a few times where we could have used it, and we had backup plans if we needed to borrow one from Brandon or Winkler in case of a big emergency. But buying a used truck turned out to be more challenging than we expected." The council approved a budget of $400,000 for the 2000 Pierce Dash 100-foot Aerial Platform truck, which originally cost $410,000. The unit was purchased from Carriere Fire and Safety Co. 1988 Ltd. Carpenter expects the new truck to arrive in Portage in April or May. "The Illinois fire department we're getting it from is getting a new aerial, but they haven’t received it yet—they won’t get it until March. They’ll need some training with it first," he explained. Before finalizing the purchase, Carpenter and Carriere Fire representative Ben Vanderzwaag traveled to Bedford Park, Illinois, to inspect and test the unit to ensure it was in working condition. According to Carpenter, Carriere Fire will "Canadianize" the ladder by installing a heater in the pump compartment, replacing the tires, repainting it, and rebuilding the motor before it arrives in Portage. Carpenter also mentioned that the firefighters will receive training on the new equipment, and this was included in the purchase price. Proceeds from the sale of the 1976 aerial truck and the 1984 pumper truck will go into the fire truck reserve fund. Carpenter hopes to get $30,000 for the pumper, but he's unsure about the amount for the aerial ladder, which failed certification. He said the ladder might end up as scrap, bringing in around $2,000, though he’s hoping to get more through a sale or at a metal yard. Bedford Park Truck 709 has been sold and will be transferred after the new tower ladder is delivered.
