August 5, 2015 – A groundbreaking collaboration between Nihon Sekkei, Inc. and Autodesk, Inc. has been making waves in the Japanese construction industry over the past year. The two companies have joined forces to push the boundaries of Building Information Modeling (BIM), aiming to revolutionize how buildings are designed, constructed, and managed. As part of their first-year efforts, they’ve shared insights into their progress and outlined exciting plans for the future.

The partnership has led to the development of an integrated BIM system tailored to Japan’s unique needs. By leveraging Autodesk Revit as a foundational platform, the system is designed to streamline workflows across architecture, construction, and facility management. Key features include:

  • Unified data sharing across architectural, construction, and facility design processes, improving coordination and efficiency;
  • Enhanced visualization tools that allow teams to review and confirm structural performance and specifications, ensuring better communication;
  • Seamless integration with domestic design software, fluid analysis tools, and accounting systems, boosting design accuracy and quality;
  • Revised design drawing standards that enable broader use of BIM data throughout the project lifecycle, from planning to on-site execution;
  • Implementation of Autodesk Dynamo to automate repetitive tasks and optimize costs throughout the design lifecycle;
  • A long-term strategy to incorporate standardized BIM data into building operations and maintenance, supporting smarter facility management.

Looking Ahead

Moving forward, Nihon Sekkei and Autodesk plan to test and refine their BIM system across all stages of a building’s life cycle, from initial planning and design to ongoing operations and maintenance. Their goal is to deliver a powerful, user-friendly tool that adds real value for facility owners and managers in Japan.

In addition, the companies are working to establish global BIM workflows by engaging in knowledge exchanges with international partners, including foreign firms and leading academic institutions. This collaborative approach will help ensure that best practices and innovations are shared openly within the industry, fostering continued growth and development.
