At the just-concluded China Road Transport Vehicle Show, the new energy bus buses displayed by the bus companies have seized the limelight that should have been the main road of the exhibitors. The reason is that there has been a marked decline in highway passenger cars this year.

According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, from January to April this year, the number of passenger cars sold was 153,200, an increase of 8.63% year-on-year, and the increase was slightly higher than the first quarter. Among them, the sales of road passenger cars have shown negative growth for the first time in the past five years, which is a decrease of 2456 units over the same period of last year, a decrease of 4.92%.

Under the influence of related subsidy policies, domestic new energy passenger cars have grown rapidly. Industry insiders expect that the passenger car market will continue to grow this year due to the expectation of the school bus market and the growth of the new energy bus market.

Road passenger car sales decline

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first quarter of this year, the number of road passenger cars affected by the Chinese New Year holiday rose by 1010 units year-on-year, an increase of 11%. Taken together, the sales volume for the four months from December 2012 to March 2013, compared with December 2011 to March 2012, decreased by 2591 vehicle sales, which was a decrease of 15.2% year-on-year. From January to April 2013, the sales of highway passenger cars decreased by 2,456 vehicles over the same period of last year, a decrease of 4.92%. This is the first time that the road passenger car has experienced negative growth in the past five years.

“With the increase in domestic labor costs, some coastal foreign-funded enterprises have begun to shift to areas with lower labor costs. Most of the coastal manufacturing enterprises are not operating at full capacity and the required manpower has decreased, resulting in a decline in long-distance road transport. According to Wang Xinliang, Head of Brand Management Department of Jinlong United Automotive Industry (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., “At the same time, the diversification of railway transportation and the freeway of highways have also affected some of the capacity of highway passenger cars, which has affected the sales volume of road passenger cars. ”

Although the sales volume of highway passenger cars has declined, the sales volume of large passenger vehicles still maintains an increase in terms of segmentation. This has become the focus of the major car companies. According to data from the China Automobile Association, from January to April this year, domestic medium-sized passenger cars sold 22,200 units, a year-on-year decrease of 3.90%; large passenger cars sold 23,700 units, an increase of 1.12% year-on-year; due to higher profit margins of large buses, including Yutong Large passenger bus companies have entered.

Orient Securities Research released data showing that in April this year, Yutong large passenger car sales reached 1762, an increase of 19.3%, higher than the overall sales growth; January to April large-scale passenger car sales 7147, an increase of 16.1%.

Prior to this, Suzhou Jinlong, which focused on medium- and light-duty buses, has also begun to play an important role in the field of coaches through recent adjustments. According to statistics, in 2012, the sales volume of Suzhou Jinlong Bus reached 10,300 units, accounting for about half of the total sales. The market share also increased from 3% 10 years ago to about 12%.

New Energy leads the bus industry

Under the favorable influence of the state's subsidies for hybrid buses, domestic sales of new energy buses soared in the first four months of this year.

According to statistics, in the first four months of this year, Yutong New Energy bus sales were close to 2,000 units, and Zhongtong and Suzhou Jinlong exceeded 500 and 1,000 units respectively. The cumulative sales of three new energy buses in the first four months of the three car companies have reached 3,500 vehicles, reaching more than half of the total sales of new energy buses in China in 2012. According to statistics, domestic sales of new energy buses in 2012 were 6614 vehicles.

"To some extent, the growth of the passenger car market in the first four months of this year is mainly driven by new energy passenger cars." Wang Xinliang said that the surge in sales of new energy passenger cars stems from the advancement of state subsidies.

In August of last year, the state's three ministries and commissions issued the "Notice on Expanding the Coverage of Public Transport Buses in Hybrid Cities". It expanded the subsidies for hybrid buses from 25 model cities to the whole country and proposed a subsidy range of 3,000 to 5,000 vehicles. Subsequently, various bus companies accelerated the sales of new energy buses. Take Yutong as an example. In the fourth quarter of last year, Yutong sold 1,244 new energy buses, which accounted for about 70% of annual sales.

“The 3,000 to 5,000 vehicles announced by the state last year are expected to be completed in the first half of this year. After completion, it will be possible to cut off or adopt other subsidy measures. This has accelerated the situation in which auto companies seize subsidies,” Wang Xinliang further said.

"Market promotion in recent years has, to a certain extent, contributed to the maturity of the new energy bus technology, which has reduced the cost of purchase." Li Tongsheng, Marketing Director of Zhongtong Bus Market said.

“Even if the government’s promotion subsidies stop or the amount of subsidies has contracted, the promotion and use of new energy buses will continue to be the trend of the future.” Wang Xinliang said.
