Zhengzhou lack of gas: "gas" car to "drink" oil Shaanxi pilot: car mixed with methanol burning

Due to a growing natural gas shortage, Zhengzhou City in Henan Province has faced severe fuel supply issues at its gas stations. Over 5,000 vehicles that were previously converted to run on natural gas have now been forced to switch back to gasoline. This sudden shift has caused a spike in demand for ethanol gasoline, leading to temporary shortages in the local market. Since November, the winter peak in gas consumption has put immense pressure on Zhengzhou’s natural gas supply. To maintain stability, Zhengzhou Gas Company imposed restrictions on eight vehicle refueling stations, leaving many gas-powered cars without access to their usual fuel. As a result, these vehicles have turned to ethanol gasoline, which is now experiencing tight supply conditions. However, officials from the Henan Provincial Ethanol Gasoline Promotion Office assured the public that the situation would not worsen. They stated that additional ethanol gasoline is being transported to the city through various channels, with thousands of tons arriving recently to ensure full availability. The Tianguan Group, a major ethanol producer in the region, has also ramped up production, operating both old and new facilities to meet rising demand. With an annual capacity of 500,000 tons, 300,000 tons are allocated to Henan, while 200,000 tons are sent to neighboring provinces like Hebei and Hubei. To support distribution, Tianguan has established a dedicated railway line between its plant and the Ningxi Railway, which was recently activated. Additionally, over 50 tank trucks have been deployed to guarantee timely delivery of ethanol gasoline under all weather conditions. Meanwhile, Shaanxi Province is preparing to launch a pilot program for methanol gasoline. The provincial office announced that a mobilization meeting will be held soon, with implementation set to begin next month. The initiative involves 450 buses and taxis in four cities—Xi’an, Baoji, Yan’an, and Yulin. Special mobile refueling units will support the pilot, and only authorized stations will be allowed to sell methanol-blended fuel. Methanol gasoline in Shaanxi will include M3.8-90 and M15-93 grades, priced at 3.88 and 4.11 yuan per liter, respectively. The province has already finalized suppliers and pricing, with quality standards strictly enforced. Testing has been conducted by Xi’an Zhongli Petrochemical New Technology Co., Ltd., and the environmental protection department will oversee the final approval. The methanol industry in Shaanxi is growing rapidly, with local standards for M15 and M25 methanol gasoline already in place. The current pilot program, limited to six months, aims to assess performance and safety before potential widespread adoption in the coming year.
