From what I just heard from Jeff Rudolph:
December 29th, 2015
Spring Grove, IL – The McHenry County Fire Protection District was called to a fire at 6316 Johnsburg Road. Due to the size of the structure and the lack of nearby hydrants, command quickly escalated the response to a box alarm and eventually to a third-alarm status for water tenders. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple departments, the fire was brought under control relatively fast and didn't spread to the main residence.
I managed to snap some photos while on scene. You can see the extent of the damage to the toolshed and how close it came to affecting the larger structure. It’s quite a sight to behold, especially with all the support from neighboring departments.
Here’s what I gathered from the Northwest Herald: No one was hurt during this incident, but the damage to the Spring Grove home is estimated to exceed $100,000. The initial call came in around 2:26 PM on Sunday, and firefighters discovered flames erupting from both the roof and windows of the attached toolshed. Chief Richard Tobiasz mentioned that about 15 fire departments from surrounding areas, including those in Wisconsin, assisted in extinguishing the blaze.
The fire had already spread to the main house—a converted dairy barn—by the time crews arrived. Despite the challenges posed by the lack of hydrants in the vicinity, the teams managed to get things under control within an hour. They relied on tankers hauling water from the Spring Grove water tower to sustain their operations.
It seems the homeowner was heating cooking oil inside the toolshed when they stepped away momentarily, possibly falling asleep inside the house. Luckily, a vigilant neighbor noticed the fire, entered the home, and roused the homeowner along with their two adult sons.
Thankfully, only the first floor and the toolshed sustained significant fire damage; however, smoke did seep upstairs to the bedrooms. While the damage is extensive, Chief Tobiasz stated that the house isn’t beyond repair and might still be salvageable with renovations.
As someone who witnessed the chaos unfold firsthand, I’m grateful everyone made it out safely. It's always humbling to see how communities come together in moments like these. If you'd like, I can share some more details or insights based on what I observed today.
