On May 18, 2015, around 1:00 PM, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to a house fire at 2 Windridge Road in South Barrington. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered parts of the cedar shake roof on fire and immediately requested a MABAS Box Alarm. Due to strong winds, the alarm was escalated to a second alarm, and later to a third as crews pulled back for an exterior attack.
Multiple handlines were deployed, with some units using foam to help control the flames. After a section of the roof burned away, firefighters re-entered the home to locate and extinguish any remaining hot spots. Outside, a large fire pit was still smoldering, located upwind of the structure, adding to the complexity of the incident.
A significant number of fire departments from across the region were involved, including Barrington Countryside FPD with two engines and two tenders. Additional units came from Barrington, Lake Zurich, Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Hanover Park, West Dundee, Schaumburg, and Carpentersville. Truck companies from Hoffman Estates, McHenry Twp, Countryside, and Palatine also arrived, along with squads from Libertyville and Cary. Ambulances from Buffalo Grove and Long Grove, as well as tenders from Long Grove, McHenry Twp, Nunda Rural, Crystal Lake, Prospect Heights, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Bartlett, Wauconda, and Rutland-Dundee, were on scene. The MABAS Air 5 and the MESS Canteen also provided support.
Numerous personnel and equipment were present, highlighting the scale of the response. Several photographers captured the event, including Larry Shapiro and Steve Redick, who documented the efforts of firefighters, the use of foam, and the extensive presence of emergency vehicles. The photos show everything from large hose lines and fire trucks to crews working on the scene and even a smoldering fire pit in the backyard.
