Changan Automobile is rolling out an ambitious expansion strategy, aiming to boost its micro-vehicle production capacity from the current 600,000 units to 1.8 million within five years. In addition to setting up a new facility in Chongqing, the company is also planning to expand its operations in Nanjing and Hebei. According to reports from Netease Automotive, the full details of this expansion plan are expected to be officially announced by July this year. **Three Bases Expanding Simultaneously** In recent months, Changan has been actively working on increasing its production capabilities. On May 11, Chairman Xu Liuping met with Hebei Governor Hu Chunhua in Shijiazhuang to discuss deeper collaboration. During the meeting, Xu emphasized that Hebei Chang'an, as a key commercial vehicle base, needs to significantly increase its production capacity. He called for more support from local authorities in terms of land use and planning. Governor Hu expressed strong support for the expansion, pledging full backing for the project. On June 2, construction began on a new mini-vehicle base in Chongqing. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by 2012, with a target of producing 300,000 complete vehicles and 1 million engines. Eventually, the facility will have the capacity to produce 600,000 vehicles and 2 million engines. A week later, on June 10, Xiang Xuelong, Secretary of the Lishui County Party Committee in Nanjing, visited Changan to discuss the expansion of the Nanjing-based mini-vehicle production. Song Jia, deputy general manager of Changan Automobile and chairman of Nanjing Changan, stated that the company is fully implementing its strategic plan for mini-vehicle expansion and is seeking strong government support. Xiang Xuelong responded by promising to provide all necessary assistance to ensure the success of the project. **Micro-Vehicle Target: 60% of Total Output** Zheng Changjiang, Director of the Public Relations Division at Changan Automobile, confirmed to Netease that the company is currently finalizing a large-scale micro-vehicle expansion plan. He mentioned that Changan currently operates three micro-vehicle bases in Chongqing, Nanjing, and Hebei, with a standard capacity of 500,000 units and a maximum of 600,000. Chairman Xu had previously stated that Changan's total production capacity is expected to reach 2 million within two years and 3 million within five years. According to Zheng, micro-vehicles will account for approximately 60% of this total. This means that the production capacity for micro-cars will jump to 1.2 million in two years and 1.8 million in five years — doubling and tripling the current levels, respectively. Given these ambitious targets, it’s clear why Changan is accelerating its expansion across all three bases simultaneously. At the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Chongqing mini-vehicle plant, Xu Liuping indicated that such expansion efforts will continue steadily. With specific planning goals set to be finalized by July, the question remains: what kind of transformation will this rising "Big Four" automaker bring to the industry?
