A message from the webmaster:

I’d like to sincerely apologize to everyone who follows this website (as well as the blog) for the lack of updates, changes, and modernization over the years. When the site was first launched in August 2009, it included fire departments and districts across the region, along with details on stations and apparatus. At the time, I used three different software tools to build a layout that I believed would be user-friendly and easy to navigate.

As the site grew, the blog evolved, and the effort required to keep everything up to date became overwhelming. Adding a new department took almost as long as updating one or two pieces of equipment. It wasn’t sustainable. For example, it once took nearly 20 minutes just to add a new vehicle to a department’s page. Clearly, something had to change.

To manage the workload, I started posting all new apparatus on the blog while saving the images in a folder for later updates. Unfortunately, the main site hasn’t been updated in over a year, and that’s not acceptable.

After testing several different software solutions, the project to rebuild the entire site is now underway. This includes recreating every existing department and station, as well as those that have never been posted before. It's an enormous task, but it's necessary to make the site more efficient and easier to maintain.

Initially, I hoped to complete the new site and migrate everything at once, but that could still take months. In the meantime, the original site—Chicagoareafire.com—is still online, and the development version—Chicagoareafire.com/dev—is available for anyone to explore.

So far, the Chicago Fire Department, MABAS Division 1, MABAS Division 3, and part of MABAS Division 4 are live on the new site. Some recent apparatus have been added, but many others haven’t yet. A number of contributors have helped speed up the process, and I’m truly grateful for their support.

I welcome any corrections or submissions as we move forward. Please feel free to browse the site and send me your feedback or photos via email. Your input is crucial to keeping the information accurate and up to date.

If your department has been added to the new site, please check the details—personnel numbers, frequencies, district sizes, and station addresses. Equipment may have been retired or relocated since it was last recorded, and I need that information to keep things current.

You can tell when a department has been added by looking for a white box around the station photo on the MABAS division pages, along with an active link.

Take a look at the new site—it offers improved navigation through dropdown menus and full-page layouts. There’s a lot to explore!

Most importantly, please be patient. This is a long and complex process, and I'm working to fit it into my schedule as best as I can.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
