In November, we shared an update about the Lake Zurich Fire Department's plan to sell their Pierce tower ladder. Since then, local media outlets such as the Journal Topics and the Daily Herald have covered the Des Plaines Fire Department’s interest in acquiring the used ladder truck. According to a recent article from the Journal Topics, the Des Plaines City Council’s public safety committee is set to review the potential purchase of a used ladder truck from Lake Zurich. This move could offer a more cost-effective solution compared to buying a new unit. Ald. Walsten highlighted that the current ladder truck, a 23-year-old Simon LTI model, is in poor condition. With the manufacturer no longer in business, parts are difficult to obtain and often require custom manufacturing, leading to high costs and delays. “This truck is beyond its life cycle,” said Fire Chief Alan Wax. “It will need to be taken out of service soon.” The 2013 budget had allocated $1.4 million for a new ladder truck, but the decision has been delayed while officials assess whether two ladder trucks are necessary. Even if only one is kept in service, a backup is essential, according to Walsten. When he learned about the availability of the Lake Zurich truck, Walsten was excited. “It’s a 2000 Pierce with just 66,000 miles on it,” he said. A consultant inspected the truck and confirmed it was in excellent condition. The total cost—including the truck, additional equipment, and possible savings from scrapping the old one—would be under $390,000. That means taxpayers could save around $1 million. Meanwhile, the Daily Herald reported that the city council is considering spending approximately $400,000 on the used aerial ladder truck from Lake Zurich. The public safety committee recently recommended the purchase to the full council. Des Plaines currently operates two ladder trucks, one on each side of town, divided by railroad tracks. With 32 at-grade crossings and frequent train traffic, having two units is crucial for timely response. However, the city is still evaluating whether both are necessary. The appraised value of the Lake Zurich truck is $10,000, and it’s unlikely any department would buy it in its current state. But given its low mileage and good condition, it could serve as a reliable backup. Officials believe this purchase is a smart and financially responsible move for the city.
