In November, we published an article detailing the Lake Zurich Fire Department's plan to sell their Pierce aerial ladder truck. Since then, local media outlets such as the *Journal Topics* and the *Daily Herald* have covered the Des Plaines Fire Department’s interest in acquiring the unit.
According to a *Journal Topics* report from last Thursday, members of the Des Plaines City Council’s public safety committee will soon review the possibility of purchasing a used ladder truck from Lake Zurich. This could provide a more affordable alternative to replacing their aging equipment.
Alderman Walsten explained that the current ladder truck, a 23-year-old Simon LTI model, is in poor condition and no longer supported by the manufacturer. “We have to custom-order many parts at a high cost and with long lead times,†he said. Fire Chief Alan Wax added that the existing truck is beyond its useful life and must be retired soon.
The city had originally budgeted $1.4 million for a new ladder truck in 2013, but this decision has been delayed while officials evaluate whether two ladder trucks are necessary. Even if only one is kept in service, a backup unit is essential, according to Walsten.
When he learned about the availability of the Lake Zurich truck, Walsten was excited. The 2000 Pierce model has only 66,000 miles on it and was recently inspected by a consultant who confirmed its excellent condition. “This deal will save Des Plaines taxpayers nearly $1 million,†he said. The total cost—including the truck, additional equipment, and potential savings from scrapping the old unit—comes to under $390,000.
Meanwhile, the *Daily Herald* reported that the city council is considering a $400,000 purchase of the used ladder truck from Lake Zurich. The public safety committee has recommended the move, citing the need for reliable emergency response across the city.
Des Plaines currently operates two ladder trucks, each serving different sides of town due to the presence of 32 at-grade railroad crossings. Officials say having just one truck would make it difficult to respond quickly. While the Lake Zurich truck is 12 years old, it has only been driven 66,000 miles and is in excellent condition, making it a viable replacement.
The city is also conducting a study to determine whether two ladder trucks are necessary. Even if only one is kept active, a backup is still required to ensure continuous service. With this acquisition, Des Plaines may avoid the high cost of a new unit and instead opt for a well-maintained used truck that meets their needs.
