Excerpts from DailyHerald.com: At Tuesday evening’s Elgin Fire Department awards ceremony, dozens of individuals were recognized for their heroic actions, ranging from an 11-year-old who spotted a fire and alerted his family to firefighters who performed life-saving procedures in the field. This was the first formal award ceremony in over a decade, made possible by the efforts of a newly reorganized committee led by Lt. Dan Wagner, according to Fire Chief John Fahy. The committee reviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of pages of documentation detailing the department’s responses to up to 12,000 emergency calls annually. “Many of the honorees went above and beyond,†Fahy said. “They did that extra thing to make it right.†Among the recipients of the Fire Chief’s Citizens Award was 11-year-old Nathan Pagnoni, who quickly alerted his grandmother when he discovered a garage fire. “I was really scared,†Nathan said. “But it was really cool to get up there and take photos with the firefighters.†Dawn Stoner of Advocate Sherman Hospital played a key role in organizing a large-scale terrorism training exercise involving 12 fire departments and other agencies at the hospital’s Center Street location. The father-and-son team of Don Michael Bush and Michael Sean Bush received recognition for helping to put out a kitchen fire and later organizing a fundraiser for the affected family. Nurse Angela Flintz used automated external defibrillator (AED) pads on a man who collapsed during an Elgin Township Triad meeting. Meanwhile, Andrew J. Robinson helped extinguish a fire using a garden hose, and Burlington Coat Factory employees Nohemi C. Farfan and Jasmine Becerra responded swiftly to a clothing rack fire in their store. Several firefighters were awarded the department’s first-ever Phoenix Awards for saving patients in full cardiorespiratory arrest. One team responded to a heroin overdose, while another assisted a man who stopped breathing at a nursing home. A company award was given to a team that performed an emergency cricothyrotomy on a gunshot victim, and another to firefighters who saved an infant choking on food. Two Meijer grocery store employees, Joseph A. Kearns and Sean R. Markwood—who couldn’t attend the ceremony—were honored for performing CPR and using an AED on someone experiencing cardiac arrest. The department’s active shooter and strategic planning committees received unit citations. Additionally, 28 members of the Elgin Fire Department, out of 133 total, were recognized for their service in the U.S. military. Thanks, Dan.
