Highland Park firefighters were called to a house fire on Churchill Lane near Kipling Lane in the northwest part of town just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. Police arrived first and confirmed the fire at 2088 Churchill Lane. Fire crews quickly responded and found a two-story home fully engulfed. The incident was escalated to a Code 4, indicating a severe working fire that had been burning for some time. Within minutes, the roof collapsed, along with a two-story portico over the driveway.
Due to the intensity of the flames, firefighters were unable to enter the main living area for a primary search. The location of the homeowners remained unknown. Neighbors later told responders that the two residents were believed to be hoarders, which may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
A large number of emergency units were dispatched to the scene, including Highland Park Squad 33, Engine 32, Engine 34, Ambulance 32, Ambulance 33, and Battalion 33, as well as units from Lake Forest, Knollwood, Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Wilmette, Northfield Squad 29, and Deerfield Battalion 20. Additional ambulances from North Chicago, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Countryside were also en route.
A Box Alarm was later requested by fire investigators, and the address was corrected to 2088 Kipling Lane. By 10 a.m., the fire department confirmed that two bodies had been recovered from the wreckage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early reports suggest it may have started in the basement. Residents in the area are being advised to remain cautious and keep an eye out for updates from local authorities.
