Highland Park firefighters were called to a house fire on Churchill Lane near Kipling Lane in the northwest part of town just after 1:00 AM on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. Police arrived first and confirmed the fire at 2088 Churchill Lane. Upon arrival, fire crews found a two-story home fully engulfed in flames. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4, indicating a working fire that had been burning for some time. Within minutes, the roof collapsed, and a two-story portico over the driveway also gave way. Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters were unable to enter the main living area for a primary search. Defensive tactics were immediately put into place. The location of the home’s occupants remained unknown. Neighbors later reported that the two residents were believed to be hoarders, which may have contributed to the difficulty in accessing the structure. A large number of emergency units responded to the scene, including Highland Park Squad 33, Engine 32, Engine 34, Ambulances 32 and 33, Battalion 33, and the 3300 unit. Additional resources came from Lake Forest, Knollwood, Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Wilmette, Northfield Squad 29, and Deerfield Battalion 20. North Chicago, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Countryside were also en route with ambulances. A Box Alarm was later requested by fire investigators, and the address was corrected to 2088 Kipling Lane. By 10:00 AM, the fire department confirmed that two bodies had been recovered from the wreckage. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and authorities are working to determine how the fire started and whether it was preventable. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the tragic loss of life and the condition of the home, which had reportedly been in poor shape for some time.
