On the early morning of March 13, 2011, the Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire at 808 Holyoke Court around 4:30 AM. The incident was triggered when a homeowner left something unattended on the stove, which led to a quick-spreading blaze. One resident had to wake up a neighbor to alert the fire department, as the fire rapidly engulfed the split-level home.
Upon arrival, first responders were met with heavy smoke pouring from the front door. The smoke remained low in the cul-de-sac, surrounding the engine that had arrived first. The fire quickly spread to the entire first floor, and the shift commander escalated the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm shortly after. The rear of the house was fully involved, with flames reaching the second floor and into the attic.
Access for firefighters was severely limited due to the burned-out stairway, forcing the use of multiple ground ladders around the structure. Initially, crews worked from the ladders to pull ceilings and access the attic, until they could enter the second floor. Multiple hand lines were deployed from all sides of the house to contain the fire.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several images and a video of the incident. He arrived roughly 30 minutes into the response, documenting the efforts of the Schaumburg Fire Department and mutual aid units. His photos show the intense conditions, including fire venting through the attic and firefighters working from ladders and inside the home.
Two residents escaped safely, but a dog perished in the fire. The temperature that day was in the mid-20s, causing water on the ground to freeze, adding to the challenges faced by firefighters.
Mutual aid units included engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospects Heights, along with chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates. The combined effort helped bring the fire under control and prevent further damage.
