The Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire around 4:30 AM on March 13, 2011, at 808 Holyoke Court. The incident was triggered when a homeowner left something unattended on the stove, leading to a quick-spreading fire. A resident had to wake up a neighbor to alert the fire department, as the flames spread rapidly through the split-level home. Upon arrival, first responders encountered heavy smoke coming from the front door, which lingered low in the cul-de-sac and surrounded the engine positioned in front of the house. The fire quickly escalated, involving the entire first floor, prompting the shift commander to upgrade the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm within minutes. As the fire moved into the second floor and attic, crews faced significant challenges due to limited access. The stairway collapsed, forcing firefighters to use multiple ground ladders around the structure for entry and egress. Initially, companies worked from the ladders to pull ceilings and reach the attic, before eventually entering the second floor. Several hand lines were deployed from all sides of the house, with Engine 53 and Truck 52 assigned to the 'A Sector.' An overview photo shows the difficult location of the home, with limited access for emergency vehicles. Another image captures the intense heat as fire vents through the attic while crews work to knock down the flames. A Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) stands by in the background, ready to assist if needed. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived about 30 minutes after the initial call and captured several images and a video documenting the scene. His photos show the extent of the damage, including the collapsed second floor and burned-out interior. Engine 53, a 2000 E-One Hurricane, was the first unit on the scene, while firefighters from Engine 51 exited the building after completing their task. Mutual aid support included units from Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Streamwood, Hanover Park, and several ambulance services from surrounding areas. Fortunately, both residents escaped safely, though a dog did not survive the fire. The temperature that day was in the mid-20s, causing water to freeze on the ground, adding to the difficulty of the operation. For more visuals, a complete photo gallery is available online. This incident highlights the challenges firefighters face during emergencies, especially in tight residential areas with limited access. It also underscores the importance of early detection and prompt response in minimizing damage and ensuring safety.
