Whether you're hosting a small gathering or simply enjoying a quiet meal at home, these trivia facts are sure to impress your friends and family, even if you're connecting over Zoom! Here are ten fascinating facts about Thanksgiving: 1. The very first Thanksgiving feast back in 1621 lasted an entire three days! Can you imagine how full everyone must have felt after indulging in all that turkey? 2. Governor William Bradford, the leader of the Pilgrims, organized the first Thanksgiving feast in Plymouth Colony. He even invited the local Wampanoag Indians to join in the festivities. 3. Giving thanks during special occasions was a common practice in Europe when the Pilgrims first arrived in America in 1620. It wasn’t unusual to set aside specific days for expressing gratitude to God. 4. Did you know that 91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving? To keep up with the demand, approximately 280 million turkeys are sold annually, totaling around 7 billion pounds of turkey! 5. Cranberries are another classic Thanksgiving staple, and nearly 20% of all cranberries consumed in the U.S. are eaten on Thanksgiving Day alone. 6. Although Thanksgiving became an official national holiday under President Lincoln, it was Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," who spent 20 years campaigning tirelessly to make it so. She wrote letters to five different presidents, numerous governors, congressmen, and media outlets before Lincoln finally declared the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. 7. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up a week to extend the Christmas shopping season. However, not all states agreed with this change. It wasn't until Congress intervened in 1941 that the holiday was officially set on the fourth Thursday of November. 8. Starting in 1947, the National Turkey Federation presents the President with a live turkey, along with two dressed turkeys, during the annual presentation. The President then pardons the live turkey, allowing it to live out its days on a historic farm. 9. The iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade began in the 1920s and has since become a beloved tradition across America. 10. Interestingly enough, our neighbors to the north in Canada also celebrate Thanksgiving, but they do so on the second Monday of October. We hope you enjoy these fun facts and wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Cook's!"
