From the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District website: The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) has officially entered into a partnership with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), a local provider based in Schiller Park, to supply 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics starting January 1, 2014, when the district begins operating independently. This agreement was signed during a special meeting on September 5, allowing Fire Chief and Administrator Jeff Swanson to begin coordinating with PSI to staff both the Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington fire stations. The trustees also started exploring options to bring in additional part-time personnel to further boost staffing levels. Recruitment is expected to start in October, with training and orientation set to begin in early November. All firefighters and paramedics will be employed by PSI but will work directly under Chief Swanson’s leadership. As part of the agreement, PSI will hire any current Barrington firefighters who are laid off due to the village's budget cuts in December, giving them a chance to continue their careers with the BCFPD. However, the signing of the contract had been delayed due to the village not yet releasing the names of the affected firefighters. This delay made it difficult for both the district and the employees to plan ahead. "We’re hoping the village will release those names as soon as possible so the firefighters can apply for these new positions," said Chief Swanson. Those hired will receive the same salary and benefits they previously had as village employees, including paid time off. They will also have the opportunity to advance into officer roles within the new department. In addition, the BCFPD trustees received strong support from local officials across several communities, including Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North and South Barrington, Barrington and Cuba Townships, and Lake County — all areas served by the district. The letter praised the decision to partner with PSI, stating that it would ensure "well-qualified, experienced personnel — including those potentially leaving the village due to its reduction in force — remain available to serve the district’s residents." Now that the PSI agreement is in place, the next step for the BCFPD board is to determine how to divide the shared equipment and apparatus between the district and the village of Barrington. Depending on the outcome, the board may also consider purchasing additional equipment to better meet the needs of the community. Â
