This afternoon, around 12:28 PM on May 3rd, 2019, Prospect Heights firefighters responded to a fire alarm at 1535 Cove Drive. The initial report indicated a fire in the laundry room of a four-unit townhouse. By the time the first responders arrived, the situation had already been escalated to a working fire and then further upgraded to a Box Alarm when Battalion 9 confirmed visible flames reaching the second-floor roof. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire pouring out of the front door, with the laundry room completely engulfed. Flames were spreading rapidly up the exterior walls and toward the roof.
The first priority was to control the fire on the first floor, which was achieved relatively quickly. Firefighters then focused their efforts on extinguishing the blaze on the second floor and within the attic space. Fortunately, the damage to the adjacent units was minimal.
Among the responding units, Prospect Heights sent Engine 39, Engine 9, Tower 9, Battalion 9, along with Chiefs 901 and 900. Support came from Wheeling with Engine 23, Engine 42, Truck 24, Battalion 24, and Chief 2401. Mount Prospect contributed Engine 14 and Battalion 3, while Des Plaines sent Tower 63 and Chief 6101. Northbrook dispatched Tower 12 and Ambulance 12, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods sent Squad 51. Arlington Heights provided Engine 2 and Chief 101, Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1, Palatine Ambulance 82, Glenview Ambulance 8, Long Grove Battalion 55, and Buffalo Grove Engine 26.
During the evacuation process, a police officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Attached are several images taken by Larry Shapiro that capture the intense firefighting efforts. One shows a firefighter pulling a hose from an engine as they battle the flames, another depicts firefighters cutting into the roof to release smoke and fire, and yet another captures a firefighter standing tall with a hose line actively engaged in extinguishing the fire. There’s also a poignant image of a firefighter covered in debris after helping to contain the blaze.
