This afternoon, at around 12:28 PM on May 3rd, 2019, firefighters from Prospect Heights responded to a report of a fire at a four-unit townhouse located at 1535 Cove Drive. Upon their arrival, the situation was quickly upgraded to a working fire before escalating further to a Box Alarm when Battalion 9 arrived on the scene. Flames were already visible through the second-floor roof, indicating the severity of the situation.
When the first responding units arrived, they encountered heavy fire emanating from the front door of the building, with the laundry room completely engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread up the exterior walls and reached the roof. Firefighters managed to control the bulk of the fire on the first floor relatively quickly, but the second floor and the roof posed additional challenges. Thankfully, the damage to the neighboring units was minimal.
The firefighting effort involved multiple units from various departments. Prospect Heights sent out Engine 39, Engine 9, Tower 9, Battalion 9, along with Chiefs 901 and 900. Support came from Wheeling with Engine 23, Engine 42, Truck 24, Battalion 24, and Chief 2401. Mount Prospect contributed Engine 14 and Battalion 3, while Des Plaines sent over Tower 63 and Chief 6101. Northbrook added Tower 12 and Ambulance 12 to the mix, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods dispatched Squad 51. Arlington Heights provided Engine 2 and Chief 101, Northfield sent Squad 29, and North Maine sent Engine 1 and Battalion 1. Palatine contributed Ambulance 82, Glenview sent Ambulance 8, Long Grove sent Battalion 55, and Buffalo Grove sent Engine 26.
During the evacuation process, a police officer sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
