On a bitterly cold Sunday back in February 1977, I was there capturing some unforgettable images at the 4th Alarm Goldblatt’s fire in Mount Prospect. The temperature was so low that everything seemed frozen solid, including the firefighters’ determination to control the blaze. Here are a few shots I took that day, featuring different fire apparatus battling the intense flames. In one image, you can see the American LaFrance Aero Chief Snorkel in action at the scene. It's an impressive sight, standing tall as it helps combat the fire. Another photo shows the Glenbrook Fire Protection District's Pierce Snorkel working its magic at the rear of the Goldblatt’s store. The conditions were brutal, but these vehicles performed admirably under such challenging circumstances. There’s also a striking photo of another Glenbrook Snorkel in the same position, highlighting the teamwork between departments. A unique detail here is how a canvas tarp was strategically used to shield certain parts of the equipment from water spray, which had quickly frozen over due to the extreme cold. This precaution ensured that the firefighters could continue their efforts without unnecessary delays caused by frozen machinery. Switching gears slightly, this next shot features the Glenbrook Snorkel alongside two Mount Prospect engines painted in their former yellow and white livery. It’s fascinating to see the collaboration between neighboring districts, especially when facing such severe weather conditions. The Mount Prospect Snorkel is prominently featured again in subsequent photos, showing its crucial role during this operation. One particular image caught my attention because it highlights the name change of the Glenbrook Fire Protection District. Originally known as the Glenview Rural Fire Protection District, this change reflects growth and modernization within the department. As I snapped away, I couldn’t help but admire the resilience of everyone involved, knowing full well how dangerous and unpredictable firefighting can be—especially in freezing temperatures like those experienced that day. These pictures not only document a significant event but also serve as a tribute to the dedication and skill of all who participated. Each frame tells a story of courage, teamwork, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Reflecting on this experience reminds me just how vital these professionals are in keeping our communities safe, no matter the season or weather conditions.
