Following the recent start-up of production at Cummings and Wilcat in the Wuhan Economic Development Zone, a wave of global auto parts giants is now accelerating their investments in the region. This trend reflects the growing importance of Wuhan as a key player in China's automotive industry.
Yesterday marked another milestone as Delphi Packard Electrical Systems Co., Ltd. officially launched its Wuhan plant, becoming the second-largest global manufacturer of automotive wire harnesses to establish a presence in the area. The new facility has also become the first Fortune 500 auto parts company to operate within the Wuhan Economic Development Zone.
The Wuhan plant is the ninth facility for Delphi Packard in China and the only one located in central China. It specializes in producing automotive wiring harnesses, which are essential components in vehicle electrical systems. These harnesses will primarily be supplied to Dongfeng Group and Shenlong Group, two major Chinese automakers.
A wiring harness is often compared to the nervous system of a car, as it connects all the electrical components and ensures proper functionality. Without it, no vehicle can operate efficiently.
According to company officials, the Wuhan plant has an annual production capacity of around 1 million wiring harnesses, sufficient to support the assembly of 150,000 vehicles per year. This capacity is expected to meet the rising demand from local automakers.
In addition to Delphi Packard, the development zone is home to other notable players, such as the Sino-U.S. joint venture Wuhan Youde Automobile Electrical Appliance Co., Ltd. With the official opening of Delphi Packard’s Wuhan plant, the area is set to further strengthen its position as a hub for automotive component manufacturing, supporting the growth of major domestic brands like Dongfeng and Shenlong.
