Following the recent start-up of production at Cummings and Wilcat in the Wuhan Economic Development Zone, major global auto parts manufacturers are now accelerating their investments in the region, eager to capitalize on the growing automotive industry in central China. Yesterday marked another milestone as the Wuhan plant of Delphi Packard Electrical Systems Co., Ltd., the second-largest global manufacturer of automotive wire harnesses, officially commenced operations. This facility is now the first Fortune 500 auto parts company to be established within the Wuhan Economic Development Zone, signaling a strong commitment from international players to the area. The Wuhan plant is the ninth facility operated by Delphi Packard in China and the only one located in the central region. It specializes in the production of automotive wiring harnesses, which serve as the critical electrical backbone of vehicles. These harnesses will primarily be supplied to Dongfeng Group and Shenlong Group, two of the largest automotive manufacturers in China. A wiring harness is often compared to the nervous system of a car — without it, the vehicle’s electrical systems cannot function. It connects various components, ensuring seamless communication between different parts of the vehicle. According to company officials, the Wuhan plant has an annual production capacity of around 1 million wiring harnesses, enough to support the assembly of approximately 150,000 vehicles per year. This capacity is expected to significantly boost the supply chain for local automakers. In addition to Delphi Packard, the development zone is also home to a Sino-U.S. joint venture, Wuhan Youde Automobile Electrical Appliance Co., Ltd. With the official launch of the Delphi Packard plant, the area is becoming a key hub for automotive components, further strengthening its appeal to global investors. As more international companies set up operations in Wuhan, the city is steadily positioning itself as a major player in the global automotive supply chain.
