Background

Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through sorting, crushing, washing, and drying processes. This means that recycled PET flakes can be manufactured wherever there is a consumption of beverages. As one of the main markets for importing recycled PET bottle flakes, more than 10-13 million tons of PET bottle flakes are imported into China annually.

In 2017, environmental regulations in China became increasingly strict, banning the import of waste plastics entirely. As part of this, recycled PET could no longer be imported in the form of bales or flakes. According to Chinese environmental rules, only granules or chips of recycled plastics can be imported. Therefore, it's essential to re-pelletize the recycled PET flakes for recyclers who handle these materials.

  • Enough pre-drying time is essential before the bottle flakes enter the re-pelletizing step. ACERETECH uses either venting type compactors or lifting type drying hoppers to dry the flakes and remove moisture, preventing PET hydrolysis during re-pelletizing.

  • Combining the modular design of processing sections with the excellent degassing performance of twin screw extruders and an automatic three-stage root-type vacuum pump system, the limit vacuum degassing pressure can reach -0.1MPa, maximizing the removal of volatiles from PET melts and ensuring minimal IV value reduction.

  • Optimized process steps and specialized processing sections of the twin screw extruder allow continuous and efficient transformation of PET flakes from solid to liquid state, avoiding yellowing caused by dead zones or localized high temperatures.
  • The strands pelletizing unit is a typical method for PET pelletizing. The strands coming out from the extruder die are manually pulled into a water trough for cooling, then dried using an air knife device, cut by the rotating blades of the pelletizer, and formed into granules/chips. This method requires more labor and skilled operation and is suitable for capacities below 600kg/h.
  • However, for high-capacity PET pelletizing tasks, the strands pelletizing method is not suitable. An automatic and reliable underwater pelletizing system is necessary to ensure high output and automation performance.
