Chicago firefighters responded this afternoon to an asphalt tank fire inside a building at 4710 W. Roosevelt Road. The initial alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm after crews noticed multiple tanks in the area and concerns about potential exposure. The scene was visible from a distance, with thick smoke rising into the sky. A Haz Mat Level I response was requested, and the alarm was later escalated to a 2-11, with special calls for units 6-3-1 and 6-3-2 in case high-expansion foam was needed. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control without the need to deploy the foam system. Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene shortly before the 2-11 and Level I were called off. He captured several images of the incident, which can be viewed here, and there's also a brief article covering the event here.
