Here's an excerpt from the City of Evanston: EVANSTON, IL – On Thursday, March 10, at around noon, Evanston firefighters were called to 1516 Brummel Street after reports of smoke coming from a residential building. When the first responders arrived, heavy black smoke was visible from the basement of the single-family home. Fire crews immediately faced intense fire conditions on the lower level. The incident was escalated to a Box Alarm, requiring three hose lines and assistance from neighboring fire departments to control the blaze. The property owners returned home and noticed smoke coming from their house. Before the firefighters arrived, one of the homeowners, an 87-year-old man, entered the building to check the source of the smoke. When the fire department arrived, they quickly located and rescued the man from the bottom of the basement stairs. Emergency medical services were initiated, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Family members were notified, and the Evanston Fire Department Chaplain Monte Dillard, along with the American Red Cross, provided condolences and support. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Smoke detectors were working properly at the time of the fire. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), it's recommended to test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least once or twice a year, depending on the manufacturer’s guidelines. If a smoke or carbon monoxide detector activates, residents should immediately evacuate the building and call 911 for assistance.
